Papaya cultivation is practiced as a system that includes intensive use of soil and often it leads to a process of degradation of the cultivated area. The use of cover crops has been demonstrated to be a conservative practice, as for example, in citrus crops (Carvalho et al., 2002). Consistent results have also been obtained with the use of leguminous plants in the interrows of papaya crops (Carvalho et al., 2004). The benefits of this practice are diverse, including improvement in soil structure, protection against erosion and increase of nitrogen input. The soil microbiological processes are important in order to maintain nutrient cycling and ecological equilibrium and to promote symbiotic associations, among other functions. For this reason, microbiological indicators are frequently used to evaluate of the impact of agricultural practice. In this study, the hypothesis tested was that the introduction of cover crops in the interrows of a papaya plantation can have positive impact on the microbiological characteristics of the soil, allowing to infer about nutrient cycling in such conditions. In order to test this hypothesis, the behavior of the soil humidity, biomass and microbial activity were assessed in a soil cultivated with legumes and grass in the interrows of a papaya plantation. |
