The research reported in this dissertation deals with the characterization of range sites on the Santa Rita Experimental Range located 50 kilometers south of Tucson, Arizona. Soil and vegetation data were collected on 90 macroplots stratified by two precipitation zones, three groups of soils, and three levels of historical livestock grazing use. Each combination of strata was sampled with five replications. The soils of the macroplots were described in terms of horizon thickness, textural class, gravel content, moist color, and presence of carbonate. Percentage rock cover, percentage slope, and aspect also were measured. The vegetation of the macroplots was sampled during January and February, 1978 for cover and plant species frequency. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance, linear correlation analysis, cluster analysis and polar ordination. Analyses of variance were calculated for soil characteristics and plant species frequencies. These analysis indicated that most soil characteristics showed significant F values for groups of soil, but not for levels of use of the initial design stratification. The analysis of variance showed that individual species also showed many significant F values for groups of soil, but that only four and five species, respectively, were significantly different for use and the interaction use-soil. Two of the four species which were significantly different for levels of use, Boutelous rothrockii and Trichachne californica, were not significantly different for groups os soil. These...
