Root rot is one of the most limiting diseases of cassava production in the Northeast Region of Brazil, causing root- yield loss from 30% to 100%. This study aimed to eval- uate the resistance of 76 cassava genotypes to dry (Fusarium spp.), soft (Phytophthora melonis) and black (species of the Botryosphaeriaceae family) root rot diseases. The roots were inoculated separately with isolates belonging to each of three disease group (dry, black and soft), by using the whole tuberous root inoculation method. The lesioned areas on the tuberous roots were measured by digital image analysis. Based on cluster analysis, four groups were found associated with the resistance to root rot diseases. About 10% of the genotypes were classified as resistant to dry and soft root rot, and 2% were classified as resistant to black root rot. Moreover, only 2% of the genotypes showed multiple resistance to these disease groups. Significant correlations were found between root peel and pulp infections by the same fungus, and between the root peel infections caused by P. melonis and Fusarium spp. These findings will be essential in the generation of plants with resistance to multiple root rot pathogens and will guide the cassava breeding programme to obtain superior varieties |

ABSTRACT - Four factors were studied in tomato plants behaviour: a. basic fertilization: 400-600-450 kg/ha and 400-1200-900 kg/ha N, P, K nutrients respectively, for level 1 and 2 af fertiiization; b. with or without 200 kg/ha of top dressed Nitrogen; c. two levels of plant population; 20.000 plants/ha (1.00 m x 0.50 m spacing) and 41.667 plants/ha 0,80 m x 0,30 rn spacing; and d. plant breeding system: with or without pruning. High plant density (41.667 plants/ha), and no pruning, isolatedly, were significant and produced the best effect in cornmercial production of fruits. The interaction between the two factors increased the production of Extra 2A fruits significantly, in metric ton/ha and number of fruits, MenosRESUMO - Foram estudados, no comportamento do tomateiro (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill), os efeitos dos seguintes fatores: a. adubação básica: 400-600-450 kg/ha de N1,P2 O5 e K2 O1 e 400-1,200-900 kg/ha de N1, P2 O5 e K2 O1, respectivamente, para os níveis 1 e 2 de adubação; b.
