A copper deficiency has accurred in young coconut hybrids planted on deep peat by the Riau Province (coast of Sumatra, Indonesia). The very characteristic symptoms apperated between 6 and 12 months after planting. In the absence of copper applications, developments can be fatal and in all cases growth is considerably retarded even if the coconuts recover by themselves. Applying copper sulphate: CuSO4, 5H2O at 25% Cu, is very effective in both preventing and correcting the deficiency. Experiments set up at RSUP demonstrated this fact and a fertilizer schedule was drawn up which prevents deficiency. From the age of two years onwards leaf copper contents increase and the probability of a copper deficiency occurring diminishes. The critical level below which a copy deficiency is highly likely has been estimated at 2 ppm of copper whereas the optimum level with no risk of deficiency can be fixed at 3 ppm. |
