In previous studies we observed that the elimination of seminal plasma from ejaculated sperm before freezing was to obtain a good recovery of motility of spermatozoa (spz) after thawing. However, when the motility is tested immediately after ejaculation we find that seminal plasma obtained during the breeding season (BSSP), exhibits a positive effect on the maintenance of motility whether these spermatozoa are of breeding or of non-breeding season. In contrast, seminal plasma of non breeding season elicits a strongly negative effect. This negative effect is also observed when epididymal spermatozoa are used instead of ejaculated spermatozoa. Epididymal spermatozoa exhibit a much longer survival time than ejaculated spermatozoa in the absence of added material and, BSSP is without any effect. Thus the positive effect of BSSP on ejaculated spermatozoa is probably due to the inhibition of the negative factor from seminal plasma. Very likely, this negative factor acts rapidly explaining the shorter survival time of ejaculated spermatozoa compared to epididymal spermatozoa. This hypothesis is strengthened by the observation that a protein fraction from bulbourethral glands secretion exhibits a very strong negative effect on the motility of epididymal spermatozoa. The effect of this factor can be inhibited by material from the seminal vesicles. Thus variations of fertility of goat spermatozoa as a function of season might be controlled by the balance between these two factors. |
