In the Cerrado region of Central Brazil, phosphorus is intimately related to crop productivity in newly-opened areas with highly weathered and acid soils. This nutrient is also important in governing sustainable agricultural use of these soils during continuous cultivation, when the soil P availability is no longer the major limiting factor for plant growth. Thus, before adressing sustainable use of these soils we need to correct the soil P status to a non-limiting level for economical production. Chemical and mineralogical characteristics of these soil impose strong limitations to the correction of their natural very low available P levels. Curiously, mos of these characteristics also are responsible for maintaining the focus of their sustainable use on plant P nutrition and the long-term balance of this nutrient in soil-plant system. In this work we present data about P as a limiting factor of economical use of Cerrado soils, emphasizing the great resistance to changes in the P status in most of these soils. The soybean-corn sequence, as a farm's solutin to economically cultivate new areas is discussed. In a second part of this work, forest productivity and its sustainability in these acid soils is discussed. Soil mineral and soil water deficientes are emphasized. The retention of nutrients in the biomass produced on these poor soils is analyzed, as a condition for sustainable forest production. Some management practices to improve the sustainability of these systems are discussed.
