Past and present activities of cassava germplasm collection, its subsequent use in cassava breeding and conservation at the international institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) are discussed. Cassava is the most important staple crop in Africa accounting for a third of all staples consumed. IITA began collecting cassava germplasm in the early 1970s with the aim of establishing a genetic improvement scheme. The collection was assembled from the tropics and local cultivars from withinNigeria to breed high yieldina, resistant varieties. This served as a basis for cassava breeding at IITA. Additional collections continue to be made, with 625 collections/accessions made by IITA and collaborating National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) in the last five years. A survey by IITA in 1991 revealed that a total of approximately 6000 accessions (consisting of 3400 local cultivars) are being held in 17major cassava growing countries. IITA itself maintains a field collection of about 1700 accessions at the headquarters in ibadan. |
