The relationship between hydrogen metabolism, nitrogen assimilation and transport was studied in Glycine max L. cv. Doko inoculated with mutants Hup+ (PJ17-1) or Hup- (PJ17) of strain USDA DES 122 of Bradyrhizobium japonicum. Plants were submitted to normal sunlight or to 30% full sunlight and harvested at full flowering. No difference was observed in the control treatment (normal sunlight) between plants inoculated with any of the two mutants. When submitted to shadding, plants inoculated with the Hup+ mutant showed a decrease in nodule and shoot dry matter, and in total shoot nitrogen, whereas plants inoculated with the Hup- mutant were not significantly affected by shadding. An increase was observed in the activity of enzymes related to both nitrogen assi milation and ureide synthesis when plants were submitted to shadding. Nodules formed by the Hup- mutant also showed an increase in the relative efficiency due to shadding, and this was closely followed by the ratio of ureide-N/total-N transported by the sap. Both parameters remained essentially constant for the Hup+ nodules, independently of light treatment. The increase in most observed parameters may explain why plants inoculated with the Hup- mutant were able to compensate for the decrease in total light intensity, resulting in growth rates similar to the control plants.
