The effect of two feeding regimes on the testicular, scrotal and semen characteristics of 32 rams was investigated. Thirty-two Dorper rams that participated in the Northern Cape veld-ram project were used in this study. The first group of Dorper rams (n = 16), (469.4 :t 30.5 days of age) were fed ad lib intensively on a high-energy (9.5 MJ ME/kg DM, 12.5% CP, 15% fibre and 2.5% fat; mean intake 2.32kg/ram/day) diet for 7 weeks, while the second group of rams (n = 16), (460.6 :t 34.1 days of age) were managed on natural pastures (veld) plus supplementation and received 100g/ram/dayof a maintenance lick containing 16% CP, 8 MJ ME/kg DM and 10% fibre for the same period. At the end of the 49-day trial period, semen was collected by electro-ejaculation and all rams were slaughtered. The semen, scrotal and testicular characteristics were compared between the groups. Nutrition had an influence on scrotal circumference, scrotal fat, scrotal weight, testes weight and volume. There were marked differences between the groups in favor of the extensively managed (EM) group for most semen characteristics. The evidence suggests that intensive feeding of young rams could impair their spermatogenesis. |
