Usage of fruits determines the direction of selection. While the sweet type generally lacks the qualities associated with processing, the pleasant flavor makes it a desirable table fruit. The ascorbic acid content is considered low only when compared with the sour type, but far exceeds that of other commonly consumed fruits. The mild flavor and nutritional value of the fruit and the attractive ornamental of the plant are desirable qualities for home plantings. The results reported herein show that the sour type is generally higher in ascorbic acid content, more fruitful, and produces trees better suited to orchard culture than the sweet tupe. |
