Soybean cyst nematode (SCN) Heterodera glycines is a serious pest of soybeans in U.S. A number of resistant soybean PI lines have been isolated. PI 437654 has been reported to be highly resistant to races 1 through 5 of the SCN. This PI line was crosses with PI 88788 (resistant to races 3 & 4), PI 90763 (resistant to races 1, 2, 3, & 5) and Peking (resistant to races 1, 3, & 5), and the F2 and backcross generations were tested against races of SCN to study the genetic relationships between them. The screening was done by inoculating a soybean seedling with 1000 eggs and juveniles and enumerating the cysts and white females 30 days after inoculation. The plantas were classified on the bases of index of parasitism. For race 4, PI 437654 was found to have a dominant gene for resistance when crossed with PI 90763, whereas when crossed with Peking it had one recessive gene for resistance. For race 5, PI 437654 when crossed with PI 88788 showed segregation pattern for 1 recessive and 2 dominant genes for resistance. There was no segregation for race 5 resistance in crosses involving PI 437654. Peking and PI 90763. The results further demonstrated the presence of additional genes for resistance not reported before. |
