A two-year study of the rust mite, Phyllocoptruta oleivora Ashmead, shows that its biology is closely linked to phenology of its host plant 'Valencia late' orange trees (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck). This citrus variety exhibits three distinct periods of foliage production each year in Cuba and these periods affect the dynamics of the rust mite population. The rust mite normally peaks in density on the foliage produced during the first flush phenophase and the fungus Hirsutella thompsonii Fisher played a very impotant role as a bioregulator in the ecological conditions of the Guira de Melena Citrus station in Havana Province. |
