Acidic, highly-weathered soils cover about two-thirds of tropical America and are of great ecological and economical importance. Soil acidity is the major constraint for agriculture production on these soils, as it affects crop productivity, soil function and microbial ecology. It determines type, number and activity of soil microorganism, thus affecting soil biological processes. Acidity-microbial interactions in soil are very complex and soil microorganisms can be largely adapted to this type of stress. However, liming acidic soils enhances microbial processes related to soil organic matter decomposition, nutrient transformation and cycling and root-microbial symbioses; all with an immediate impact on crop productivity and sustainability. |
