The spores and endotoxin from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), are effective poisons against some insects, and it shares the pesticide market with chemical compounds. Unfortunately economic problems have inhibited Bt production in Brazil, where its production has been studied using different substrates and processes. Bt spores production was studied using "manipueira" a wastewater from cassava flour industry as culture medium. Laboratory studies were conducted in shaker and minifermentor with controlled temperature and agitation using "manipueira" and tap water as culture medium. The pH was ajusted to 7.3 before sterilization. Bt spores formation was followed by microscope observation, optical density of the beer and plate count of viable spores. The results attained showed the viability of using this culture medium for Bt spore production, and the yield of spores was higher than those observed with different substrates. These observations enable to follow studying the separation and purification of the toxin and its activity against some insect pests. |

Study to evaluate the feasibiligy of sustainable agroforestry in central Amazonia (Brasil), paying special attention to the potential to recultivate degraded areas. For this purpose differente mixed cultivationsystems are being tested and compared to monocultures designed according to common practices. Study groups of various SHIFT-Projects are working on this experimental site, each groupe dealing with particular aspects of the different agro-ecosystems. |
