Soils are discussed in relation to woodland savanna and two types of forest on the Serra do Roncador, Mato Grosso. Deciduous Seasonal Forest is associated with the occurrence of Ustalfs and Tropepts. At their regional boundary both savanna and 'dry forest' (semi-evergreen seasonal forest) have developed on Oxisols and oxic Entisols and the close coincidence of the vegetation boundary with a textural division within these soils suggests that texture, probably through its effect on soil moisture, is the main factor determining the boundary. Analyses of replicated volume samples show that 'dry forest' soils have a significantly higher content of organic carbon and extractable phosphorus, a higher C/N ratio and a significantly lower bulk density, pH and exchangeable calcium than the savanna soils. These differences are considered to be secondary in origin. |
