A better understanding of relevant plant processes is desirable in order to devise reliable ways for the control of growth and differentiation. Knowledge of the native hormonal balance is of paramount value in this connection, but also internal and external factors, interacting with production, translocation and activity of native growth substances must be carefully studied. Vegetative growth, flower formation, fruit set, peel and fruit development, the main aspects of tree performance, are considered with regard to existing knowledge and the degree of success attained to date in horticultural control. Further advances in horticultural control are necessarily conditioned by additional steps in the understanding of basic plant processes. |
