Detached and undetached green Shamouti oranges were dipped in ethephon solutions ar different dates during the season. The degreening effect was found to depend on the amount, rather than the concetration, of active material. The duration of dip was immaterial, and the application of one drop was sufficiente to cause homogeneous color changes all over the fruit. Higher storage temperature, if applied during the first three days after treatment, gave better results. Both pre-harvest and post-harvest dips had a degreening effect, but fruits treated too early in the season while on the tree changed color only temporarily and regreened later. Ethephon did not enhance internal ripening, but cause fruit and leaf drop when applied at high concentrations. Ethephon on the tree at medium concentrations, a few weeks before natural color break, offer some practical promise. |
