Abstract: There are problems associated with the area of New South Wales. A deterioration of range condition, social isolation and falling income. The latter is particularly affected by the dependence on wool income and the current collapse of prices for the 23 type of wool produced on range. This paper considers the opportunity for meat goat farming to be adopted to supplement income from sheep. Captured non-managed goats have been an erratic supplementary income for some years. With minimal management these goats can provide a significant income. The returns from goats and the potential to improve these returns, would suggest that pastoralists should diversify and adopt goat meat production along with wool. This would necessitate a concomitant reduction in sheep numbers. The long term effect of goats on western NSW range environment is unknown but Harrington concluded that it is a management problem and not an animal species problem. |
