Both cultural and mechanical erosion practices in the United States are based on data collected since 1928, when the original soil erosion experiment stations were established. Data from these stations were finally collated at the Agricultural Research Service Runoff and Soil Loss Data Center at Lafayette, Indiana, in 1954. This Center developed the Universal Soil Loss Equation, which is used throughout the US and some other countries to develop criteria for controlling field erosion.
