The gathering, storage, and distribution of information is critical for the management of natural resources. However, to be useful, the information must be summarized and presented in a manner that decision makers can utilize. Producers on the Texas High Plains, for example, can and sometimes do monitor soil water conditions through out the growing season. Proper use of this information to schedule irrigations for better management of water resources is not well defined. This paper focuses on irrigation water management in the Texas High Plains where ground water from the Ogallala aquifer is being depleted. Farmers in this region are struggling to maintain farm income and irrigation increases net returns. This study develops an easy-to-use decision aid for scheduling irrigations so as to maximize net returns and possibly decrease irrigation water applied, thus conserving the resource. The final product is a set of decision tables displaying the expected value of an irrigation at each decision stage given current and past soil water measurements. Scheduling irrigations based on soil moisture information in this region could conserve a depletable resource and increase the economic and physical life of irrigation. |
