With the aim to augment prolificacy, prolific Garole rams were crossed with Malpura sheep. Results show that crossing of Garole with Malpura sheep increased litter size and fecundity gene has been incorporated into the Garole X Malpura (GM) genotype. The fertility %, lambing rate and litter size in Malpura vs. GM were 86.99 vs. 89.19, 90.52 vs. 138.57 and 1.04 vs. 1.56, respectively. This genetic group is adaptable under semi-arid region of the country and it might prove a valuable germplasm towards evolving a new prolific strain of sheep having optimum body weight for enhancing mutton production in the country. Further, there is a need to strengthen the GM half-breds population and the ewes of this genetic group are required to be backcrossed with Malpura for minimizing the differences in the body weight maintaining prolific genes. |
