A high lint strength but low yielding strain extracted from the tri-species hybrid arboreum-thurberi-hirsutum was crossed with an adapted strain of Upland cotton. A population of 92 randomly chosen F3 progenies from this cross were grown in 3 replicates in 2 environments. Estimates were obtained of the genotypic and environmental variances and covariances among various yield and fiber quality traits. The major proportion of the observed phenotypic variances among progeny means was attributable to genotypic effects, ranging form 59% for lint yield to 90% for lint percentage and lint strength. The progenty X environment interaction variances made up rather small proportions of the total phenotypic variances, ranging from 1% for lint stength to 16% for yield. Plot error variances ranged from 8% of the total variance for lint percentage up to 25% for lint yield. Genotypic correlations indicated a positive relationship between lint yield and lint percentage (r = 0.84), and a negative relationship of fiber strength with both lint yield and lint percentage (r = 0.64 and - 0.58, respectively). Neither fiber length or fiber finesess were substantially correlated with yield, lint percentage, or fiber strength. Predicted effects of selection character combinations of hight yield and lint percentage with hight lint strength from this population. Possible explanations for the observed restrictions orn character ... |
