The effects of lime and differential fertilizacion on the yield and plant tissue composition of cottonm corn and soybeans were determinated over a two year period on three campo cerrado soils- State of São Paulo, Brazil. The soils studies were in virgin areas and included a darck red latosol, a red-yellow latosol and a deep regosol. These are the typical soils found on some 400 milion acres of scrub savannah in the central plateau area of Brazil.
Yields of all crops increased sharply with the application of dolomitic limestone. The limestone corrected excessive soil acidity, supplied calcium and magnesium as plant nutrients and enhanced the uptake of the native phosphosrus, nitrogen, and sulphur. Used together with limestone, responses were obtained with potassium, phosphorus, nitrogen, sulphur and the micronutrients, zinc, boron and molybdeum. The especifc requirement for each nutrient was dependent on the crop being grown and the level of lime application. These experiments are part of a long term study to determine the lime and fertilizer requeriments for crop production under various crop rotation practices.
The feasibility of using limestone and fertilizers in the production of cotton, corn and soybeans on campo cerrado soils is reviewed and appers to be economically justified.
