: Characteristics of goat semen collected with artificial vagina (AV), electro-ejaculator (EE), and Bailey ejaculator (BE) were compared. Semen was collected from 4 bucks with AV, EE and BE and the experiment was repeated 3 times for a total of 36 separate collections. The semen was evaluated for volume (VO/ml), sperm concentration (SC:X10 9/ml), mass activity (MA:0-4, no activity-rapid swirling), sperm motility (SM:percentage), and pH. The means of semen samples collected with AV, EE and BE were 0.36, 0.65, 0.58 (VO/ml); 4.62, 2.10, 1.36 (SC); 4.0, 3.25, 2.75 (MA); 80.5, 77.5, 75.83 (SM); 6.15, 7.0, 7.04 (pH), respectively. Semen collected by AV was significantly lower in VO, lower in pH, higher in MA, and higher in SC. There was no difference in SM of semen samples collected by AV, EE and BE. Comparison of EE with BE on the basis of the above semen evaluation criteria demonstrated a significat difference only is SC (EE greater than BE). There were no differences in M, of semen samples collected by AV, EE and BE. Comparison of EE with BE on the basis of the above semen evaluation criteria demonstrated a significant difference only in SC (EE greater than BE). Greater VO, lower SC and higher pH of EE and BE semen suggest a greater contribution of accessory sex gland secretions. AV samples were more representative of natural ejaculates; however, bucks must be trained to the use of AV. Use of EE and BE resulted in excessive vocalization, intense muscular straining of rear limbs and rectal hemorrhage as evidenced by presence of blood on the probes. BE appeared to be more traumatic than EE, possibly because the battery voltage delivered by the BE cannot be controlled. A lower voltage may be more satisfactory Menos: Characteristics of goat semen collected with artificial vagina (AV), electro-ejaculator (EE), and Bailey ejaculator (BE) were compared.
