The Pantanal is a vast savanna floodplain of 140,000 km2, characterized by shallow, slowly flowing waters with luxuriant growths of emergent and floating vascular plants. Dissolved oxygen is strongly depleted in many areas, even though the water column is wll-mixed and the waters are therefore in contact with the atmosphere. The oxygen depletion results from the intense biological activity, which is predominantly heterotrophic beneath the water surface and likely involves the roots of vascular plants as well as the microbial community. We discuss why the waters of the Pantanal may be more oxygen-depleted than those of the Amazon and Orinoco floodplains an the Everglades. |
