1. Three Mexican varieties and two Cuban ecotypes of Clitoria ternatea L. were compared in a split plot design for their green forage production and dry matter, protein and fibre content, with and without irrigation. 2. The variety CO5 (Conchita Clara) from Cotaxela, Mexico, had the highest annual production (84.0 and 81.8t/ha with and without irrigation respectively). Although irrigation did not significantly increase the yield of this variety it gave significant improvements in all others. There was a close correlation between yield, and temperature and rainfall conditions in the non-irrigated plots. 3. C. ternatea is well adapted to the seasonal climatic conditions of Cuba and shows particular promise as a forage legume for the rainy season. Its dry season production is poor with irrigation and non-existent without it. |
