This article focuses on the logical design of OO databases, more specifically on the mapping of ER conceptual models into OO databases. As we intend to show, current mapping alternatives do not take advantage of all the benefits brought by the OO technology. Our fundamental goal is to find alternatives that allow an effective exploitation of the positive aspects of OODBMS. With this mind, we propose an architecture in which the database is organized in terms of two different logical perspectives: the the structural perspective, in which the database is perceived as a set of independent objects that describe the database structure, and the behavioral perspective, whence the database is seen as a set of complex objects that contain methods for querying and modifying the database contents. The mapping of an ER schema into an OO logical schema that incorporates both perspectives is also described. |
