The value of a commercial blue-green algae inoculant (Alga-Vita) for supplying N to citrus by biological fixation is being investigated in 2 field experiments. The first experiment was established in a 'Salustiana' orange orchard. The treatments were: 1) control without N fertilizer, 2) ammonium sulfate fertilizer at 380 kg N/ha, 3) inoculat at 2 liter/ha, and 4) inoculant at 3 liters/ha. For the second experiment, a 'Washington' navel orange orchard was selected. The treatments were: 1) ammonium sulfate at 280 kg N/ha, and 2) inoculant at 2 liters/ha. The observations made include periodical soil and leaf analysis during the spring, summer and fall months, and fruit yield and quality. After the first two years results showed the inoculant decreased the NO-3 content in the soil, the N content in leaves, and yield in the second year, as compared with the chemical fertilizer. While the inoculant improved fruit quality over that for the chemical fertilizer, no significant differences on fruit characteristics were obtained in comparison with the control treatments. |
