In a field trial with a locally made system, drip irrigation caused earlier flowering, earlier setting, better and higher rates of watermelon vegetative growth than sprinkler and furrow irrigation. The drip irrigated strip had the best production in tons per feddan and in kg per cubic meter of irrigation water and had the least nematode harmful effects. Nograsses or weeds grew between the plants and rows due to low moisture conditions in the areas. The sprinkler and furrow irrigated plots were impregnated with dense weeds due favorouble moisture content distribution. Salinity decreasad in wetted drip irrigated areas and were concentrated at their boundaies. Irregular salt distribution was observed in the sprinkler irrigated plots while the salts were concentrated close to the plants and the root zone in the furrow irrigated plots. The root distribution patterns were measured. |
