In the last 10 years, a great expansion of Brazilian agriculture has occurred in the Centre-West region, more specifically on the Cerrados area. This region has been cultivated over large areas, with two or three crops per year. Soil compaction is a major problem in both crop fields, and in the cattle grazing areas. This research tested a methodology on a Dark Red Latosol, clayey soil, using a hydraulic electronic penetrometer, developed by UNICAMP, to help farmers to characterize compaction problems, with a high capacity of measurements, high precision, and good quality data. The area tested was growing no-tillage maize under a centre pivot irrigation system. The data were recorded on a laptop HD, which controlled all the variables on real time. The over all performance of the electronic penetrometer was good, indicating this was a powerful tool to help the farmers to characterize the compaction problems of large areas in a short period of time. Date are still being collected for further analysis. |
