Cigar-end rot, which is caused by the fungus Verticillium theobromae, has been recorded in several banana-growing areas including West Africa, South Africa, the Canary Islands, Trinidad and Queensland. The fungal pathogen attacks the flowers infecting the perianth. As the fruits develop, the initial infection of the perianth slowly spreads along the finger causing s blackening of the skin and shrinkage and folding ofthe tissue. |
