In an experiment comprising of three plant spacings (30, 45 and high and 60 cm), two fertility levels, i, e, low (50 kg N2 and 30 kg P2O5) and high (100 kg N2, and 60 kg P2O5) fertility, and six treatments of pruning (no pruning, pruning to one, two, three, four or five fruits) were tried to see their effect on flowering, fruiting, yield and quality of muskmelon variety Hara Madhu. Pruning to one fruit was found to hasten fruit maturity by about 7 days as compared to control plants. Number of fruits per plant (except in case of pruning to one and two fruits) and average yield per hectare were significantly increased where pruning was done in comparison to control plants. However effect of spacing and fertility levels on fruit maturityand number of fruits per plant could not to be noticed. Yield per hectare was significantly reduced (151 80 q/ha) under wider plant spacing as compared to medium (226.2 q/ha) and closer spacing (333.6 q/ha). Fruits harvested fro pruned plants showed higher T. S. S. ascorbic acid, reducing sugars and better pulp thickness. Pruning did not help in increasing nitrogen content in plant tissues though phosphorus content was improved in the pruned plants. Spacing and fertility status os soil did show any remarkable effect on various quality characters except that nitrogen content of plant was improved in closer spacing and phosphorus content under higher fertility status of soil. |
