The present experiment compares the efficiency of N utilisation in growing lambs given different temporal patterns of post-ruminal energy and protein supply. The timing of energy and protein absorption seemed to influence the metabolic fate of absorbed N. The positive response to synchronous absorption was only apparent when the nutrients were supplied in a pulsatile manner (compare treatments SP and SC). This may be due to the increased response in plasma insulin concentrations observed in treatment SP. These results may explain some of the differences in the efficiency of nitrogen utilisation between ruminant and non-ruminant animals. |
