1. Although the present set of site index curves should be considered provisional, they might be successfully used for site productive capacity classification for Pinus taeda plantations in the central region of the state of Parana. When the stands become old enough, i.e. reach an age close to the rotation age, these curves should be revised. A base age of 20 years seems resonable for use in final site index curves construction. 2. The methodology used for site index curve construction proved to be very efficient. The final site index curves represented the actual height growth very for all sites. There fore, this methodology could be used for improvement, modification or extension of the present site curves. It could also be used for site index curve construction for other species. 3. Concerning basal growth, the main conclusion of this research was the confirmation of the initial hypothesis which state that it is possible to combine data from permanent sample plots from young stands with data from temporary sample plots from older stands in order to develop a common model for prediction of basal area yield. 4. At least for the range of available initial stockings (1100 - 4440 stems/ha), there is strong indication of common asymptotic basal area figures for unthinned Pinus taeda plantations in the central region of Parana's state. This conclusion agrees with the doctrine of a trend towards normaly in non normal stands. It is also related to the assumption that there is a limit to the amount of liver matter that can be sustained by a given site. Stocking densities lower than 1000 stems per hectare probaly would not reach the same common asymptote, at least within a practical rotation length. 5. The Chapman - Richards modification of the Bertalanffy growth model proved to be a very flexible function for fitting basal area growth data from Pinus taeda plantations in the surveyed region. The success of the analyses was partialy due to the inherent flexibility of the used model, but even if a less flexible model had been used a common asymptote also would probably be evidenced. 6. Since the parameter "b" is function of to (the age at which the trees reach breast height), and since to is very likely to be equal for all levels of stocking densities within a site only the parameterK would be responsible for basal area growth curve for a particular unthinned stand. If a common basal area asymptote is also assumed for a particular species and site, a series of growth curves could be constructed by constructed by varying K. The resulting curves would represent the so-called variable density yield table, and the curves wold be polymorphic. Once the actual basal area and age are known for specific site, then the equation would be solved for K, and the curve conforming with the particular value of the estimated K would be picked out for yield table construction for this stand.
