In this experiment the SRD (Sem Raca Definida) goats and Morada Nova sheep were maintained on buffel grass pastures in 1978 and 1979 and their post-weaning (after 112 days of age) weights were recorded once for each of the subsequent 9 months (November to July). At weaning, lambs and kids weighed 15.53 kg and 13.73 kg, respectively and at the end of experiment when the age of the animals was around 13 months, these weights were 27.13 and 23.32 kg, respectively. Past experience based on the economic value of meat and size of skin has shown that the best weight at slaughter for local goats is 21.0 kg and for sheep is 25.0 kg which is reached around 18 months of age on native range pastures. In the present experiment these respective weights were reached when the animals were about 11 months of age in both species. Sheep clearly seemed to have an advantage over goats and at no stage sheep showed a lower body weight to goats. However, in the first year, when the pasture may have been in poorer conditions, sheep had a marked advantage. In the second year through, the goats grew almost as fast as sheep in the first six months of the experiment with comparable monthly body weights, but subsequently, sheep again showed a better rate of growth and this pattern gave a significant species X year interaction. We tend to conclude that on this type of pasture these kind of sheep may perform better than the particular goats; and Morada Nova sheep may be a much desirable type to choose as it also has better prolificacy MenosIn this experiment the SRD (Sem Raca Definida) goats and Morada Nova sheep were maintained on buffel grass pastures in 1978 and 1979 and their post-weaning (after 112 days of age) weights were recorded once for each of the subsequent 9 months (November to July).
