Percent dry-matter disappearance (DMD) by a solution of 0.2% pepsin dissolved in 0.075N HCl as determined for 49 forage (hay) samples, was found to be highly correlated (r = 0.95) with forage digestible energy intake potential as expressed by their Nutritive Value Index (NVI) measured in vivo. The regression equation for the prediction of forage NVI (Y) from in vitro DMD (X) was Y = -0.75 + 1.60X. The forage samples tested originated from various climatic areas and consisted of 35 grasses and 14 legumes. The in vitro procedure described was relatively simple and inexpensive, utilizing standardized chemicals; all factors contributing to uniformity of results both within and between laboratories. |
