Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is a member of the family Caricaceae, and is a popular fruit crop throughout the subtropies. The Caricaceae consists of four genera: Carica, Cylicomorpha, Jacaratia and Jarilla, all ofwhich are native to tropical America except for the small genus Cylicomorpha, which is indigenous to Africa (Purseglove 1968). The genus Carica contains ca. 40 species in tropical and subtropical America; the chromosome number for all Carica species is 2x = 2n = 18. It is belived to have originated in Central America, where it may have arisen after natural hybridization between C. peltata Hook and Arn. and another Carica species. The papaya is the only species within the genus of major economic importance, although C. candamarcenis Hook. f., C. monoica Desf., C. erythrocarpa Heilborn., babaco C. pentagona Heilborn, C. quercifolia Benth. and Hook. and C. goudotiana Solms-Lauback are also edible, but are usually used in preservers. The babaco, which is believed to be a natural hybrid of C. stipulata Badillo and C. pubescens Lenne and Koch, has increasing importance as a fruit crop in Andean South America and in New Zealand. |
