A technique is described for preparing oesophageal fistulae in catle restrained in a headbail and under local anaesthesia. The method has been used successfuly on 14 animals, whole body weights varied from 200 kg to over 300 kg at surgery. Fistulae ahave been established for 6 to 18 months at the time of writing. Failure of the fistulae has not occurred, while loss of plugs and leakage from the fistuala have been minimal. Factors that may contribute to the success of this technique are immediate return of the animal to feed and water after surgery, and the absence of prolonged periods of recumbency. |
