Genetic trnasformation of plants requires control of three key stages: a very efficient regeneration system (somatic embryogenesis and cell suspensions); the transformation method itself including transfer of the gene, its expression, and a good system for selecting the transformed plants. Isolation of the genes conferring a particular type of resistance or agronomic trait to the transformed plants has to be made in parallel. CATIE and CIRAD have collaborated for 6 years in the development of in vitro regenerated plant systems. Somatic embryogenesis; Embryogenic cell suspension; Molecular biology and its applications in the Musa improvement program. Library characterization and RFLP analyses; Isoenzyme and RADP analyses; Construction of a partial molecular linkage map of diploid bananas; Evaluation of the genetic diversity in diploid bananas. |
