Citrus variegated chlorosis (CVC) was observed as a new, destructive distructive disease of citrus in Brazil in 1987. CVC affected trees produce small fruit that ripen early, have a hard rind and are not marketable. Affected trees do not die, but are characterized by stunting, canopy dieback, brililiant chlorosis of foliage, and the presence of yellow blotches on top leaf surfaces with a corresponding gummy lesion beneath. A xylem inhabiting bacteria, Xylella fastidiosa, has ben as sociated with CVC disease by electron microscopy and culturing. A dot immunobinding assay (DIBA) has been developed using antisera specific for X. fastidiosa isolated from other hosts. The DIBA can be used to detect the presence of X. fastidiosa in CVC affected trees. The assay is being used to determine the association between CVC and the presence of X. fastidiosa and as an aid in transmission and epidemiology studies. |
