Abstract : This manual is directed to animal husbandmen in the tropics and to all whose interest lies in the breeding of animals adapted to unfavourable climatic conditions. Its purpose is to suggest plans and techniques for the study of the direct effects of climate on farm animals in the field. The manual opens with a general plan for studying environmental conditions and then describes various methods of different degrees of complexity for measuring air temperature, humidity, air movement and solar radiation. These chapters are excellent, though it is doubtful if the field worker would have available to him the methods for measuring solar radiation that are described. A suggested plan for the study of the reactions of farm animals to the direct effects of climate is then given, including an excellent page or two on the keeping of experimental records. This is followed by descriptions of methods for measuring such physiological entities as coat colour, depth of coat, mechanical properties, hair density, length, shape, thickness and wetness, and body form. A fifth section deals with conditions affecting animal reactions such as activity, feeding, reproductive state, health and management. The last section covers the interpretation of field studies and their application to practical production and includes material on the formulation of improvement programmes for tropical countries. Literature citations are given for further reading and the sources of the instruments mentioned in the text are tabulated. The manual is written in a simple and lucid style and each measurement described is preceded by a short note on its significance in regard to the physiology of the animal. When one measurement is dealt with, a short note is appended on the other measurements that should be simultaneously acquired for proper interpretation. Many of the methods given are ingeniously simple and of the author's own devising. The instruments suggested are American and it is regrettable that British equivalents, which in many instances are superior, are not given. The manual is quite indispensable to all who work on the environmental physiology of farm animals and it is to be hoped that it will circulate widely in the Colonial Veterinary and Agricultural Services, and so encourage the stimulation of interest in animal adaptability and the carrying out of work in the field on this subject.
