Under the climatic conditions of Western Europe, semen production of dairy male goats is satisfactory during the breeding season, i.e. from September through to February, but most females are inseminated in the non-breeding season when semen production is significantly reduced quantity and quality wise. Therefore, it was necessary to set up an efficient long term storage technique for goat sperm collected in the breeding season but inseminated in forth coming non-breeding seasons. The lastest improvements in fertility after insemination were brought about by an improved hormonal induction of oestrous and ovulation which in turn led to simplified A.I. conditions. Quite satisfactory levels of fertility may now be obtained with only one insemination performed ona fixed time basis after the end of an hormonal treatment involving administration of FGA, PMSG and Cloprostenol. There is now little room left for progress. More efficient hormonal treatments andor sperm storage techniques will be needed for new advances. An analytical approach of semen storage problems is developped. |
