Experiments were carried out on representative Ultisols and Oxisols of Puerto Rico, Brazil, Ghana, and Peru to define the lime requirements of these soils for optimum production of several food crops. These soils generally have a low cation exchange capacity. Since the soils are acid, the exchange complex is dominated by exchangeable Al. Crop response to lime has been common in these soils. Response to lime is attributed to neutralization of exchangeable Al and in some instances to elimination of Mn toxicity. The exchangeable Al content of these soils provides a reliable measure of their lime requirement. A few acid soils have a low cation exchange capacity and a low content of exchangeable Al. Their lime requirement is relatively low. On some soils, lime additions may exchange the availability of soil phosphorus. Weathering of minerals such as Al-chlorine and mineralization of organic matter provide sources of exchangeable Al in certain soils and increase their lime requirement. |
