The aim was to use this nondestructive method to quantify patterns of change in carcass fat, carcass muscle and internal fat in ewes of differing age and reproductive status. Internal fat is a more labile store of energy than carcass fat or carcass muscle. This conclusion leads to two questions: (i) Where animals partition energy differently between carcass and internal depots, or where they differ in the differential depletion of these energy stores, is this related to their ability to produce milk and nurture lambs? (ii) Does the relative size of different fat depots influence the degree to which they are mobilised? |
