The importance of slope gradient (S) and crop management are discussed. The slope steepness factor can be considerably modified by the soil and crop management practices. The important factor is not which crop is to be grown, but the cultural practices adopted. Surface mulching decreases the water and soil loss to a minimum regardless of the slope within a slope steepness range of 1 to 15 per cent. A no-tillage system of soil management, with adequate crop residue on the soil surface, ensures soil and water conservation with negligible water runoff and virtually no soil loss. The infiltration rate under the no-tillage system is maintained and saturated hydraulic conductivity is high. In addition, the higher level of soil organic matter in the no-tillage systemimproves the water and nutrient-retention capacity of the surface soil. The no-tillage, mulch-farming tecniques have a tremendous potential for use in developing continuous arable production systems in the humid tropics. |
