The first volume is a non-mathematical exposition of the theory of statistcs. It is organized aroud a series of sampling experiments which are designed to help the reader to grasp the physical meaning of the theorems of statistics. It is my hope that instructors who adopt this book as text will require their students to conduct at least some of these experiments. The time required in performing sucj experiments is negligible if desk calculators are available. A table of 1,000 random samples, each consisting of 5 observations, drawn from a normal population with mean equal to 50 and variance equal to 100, is given in table 1 of the appendix. If sampling equipment is not available, the samples in this table may be used for performing the experiments. |
