The Panatanal wild peanut (Arachis Kretschmeri Krap and Greg., 1994) is a perennial that has been grown since 1977 at the Indian River Research and Education Center. Several experiments were conducted and many observations made during the intervening period in an effort to determine the best use for the Pantanal. This vigorous, erect/prostate, many-branched legume has orange-colored flowers, is tolerant of short-lived flooding and yet survives droughts. It is best adapted to sandy soils with pH of 5.0 and above. High nut production is one of its best attributes. Among more than 100 tropical legumes evaluated, the crude protein (CP) was in the highest bracket; and in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) of the Pantanal was the highest. Average CP and IVOMD were about 150 and 700 g kg1, respecxtively> It associated well with Pangola digitgrass (Digitaria eriantha Steud) for about five yeras, but does not persist as well with bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Stent.) unless the soil is disturbed every year or two. Under a system of annual disking in spring, plant population increase and persistence is assured. Commercial tests using a digger/screening device indicated that several factors can be responsible for poor nut germination. A drying temperature of 35 to 38C appears to be better than 38 to 41C. Preliminary cleaning of nuts after drying by passing the material through a standard grain combine can have a devastating effect on germination if the concave is too small and/or the cylinder speed is above 450-500 rpm. A wide-open rasper bar and slow air flow may help. In ane event, rains after initial rotovating for aharvest result in field germination of nuts within several days. This result in lower nut germination. Suggestion for the use of the Pantanal wild peanut as feed for deer, dove and turkeys are described.
