Among the many support (research and extension) activities associated with sustaining and enhancing modern crop agriculture, few are as demanding, complex, and critical as those undertaken by curators at genetic resources repositories. A recently advocated paradigm for a collection curator is to represent maximum genetic variation of a taxon with a reasonable number of accessions. Yet, how do we go about defining the bounds of 'maximum genetic variation' or specifying what constitutes a ;reasonable number'? Conversely, do we jeopardize or subvert any priorities by incorporating this model or its closely related variants? Effective long-term management of plant genetic resources requires prudent planning and meticulous execution. Moreover, a recognition of the breadth and needs of the research community and associated industries served is essential. |
