Plant development was studied, in glasshouse conditions, under mine photoperiodic treatment (8h, 8h+NB (night break), 10h, 12h, 14h, 16h, 18h, 20h, and 24h), using forest or cerrado soil. The photoperiodic behaviour of B. gardneri was confirmed and flowering only place under 12h, 14h, 16h, and 8h+NB photoperiods. The species is considered to be stenophotoperiodic or an intermediate-day species. The photoperiodic response was also observed in experiments conducted in two regions of cerrado in the State of Sao Paulo. "Estacao Experimental de Itirapina" and" Reserva Biologica e Estacao Experimental de Moji-Guacu". In these experiments, regardlles of the date of sowing, plants only started to flower between December and March, when the natural photoperiod ranged from about 13h (early December) to 12h (late March), reaching its maximal length (13.6h) in late December. In this species, the occurrence of heterophylly is related to reproduction, i.e., there is the production of a different kind of leaf in plants induced for flowering. No difference was found in the levels of soluble carbohydrate and starch between the two types of leaf. |
