Water use in crop production is of worldwide concern, because water is the most important factor controlling plant growth. We have to make more efficient use of water to feed earth's expanding population, which si now 5.9 billio, growing by more than 80 million a year, and projected to be 27 billion by 2150 (National Geographic, October, 1998). The goal of this special issue is to cover advancements in the understanding of water use in crop production around the world. The authors represent every contiment except Antarctica and descrive in 16articles research in Argentina, Australia, Israel, Morocco, New Zealand, the Philippines, Spain and the United States of America. |
